Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments made by skipper Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made this message in multiple interviews following England's loss in the second Ashes versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England now face defeat with a match to spare, the captain noted he had let his message to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

But, following the opener made 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "weak men" observation after his side suffered a loss in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards went on a break to a Queensland resort between the second and third matches.

Before this match, Stokes revealed his players had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their previous three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," noted the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we could do something special entering this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

The opener's dismissal on day four was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, Australia need just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 lead with three matches played.

Defeat would prolong England's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes loss.

This series will be completed in only eleven days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a very, very good side. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's innings in the third Test probably answers doubts about his immediate future in the side, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in the team's second knock on Saturday, extending his poor record versus Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

But, Crawley insisted any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is talk from the outside. There is no discussion of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," he concluded.
