Presence
The acclaimed director tests his directorial skills with this nifty paranormal narrative shot entirely from the viewpoint of the phantom. After a clan including mother Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe settles into their new suburban house, the camera – representing the ghost – tracks their movements. The daughter appears sensing the supernatural presence, and it looks like defensive toward her. However, the motive remains? It's a fun idea that remains concise, with a twist that could catch you off guard. This Saturday, afternoon and evening times, Sky Cinema
Nicolas Cage's Meta Comedy
Nicolas Cage wholeheartedly adopts his unique fame in this autobiographical spoof. He portrays a self-obsessed Hollywood actor called Nicolas Cage who takes on a million-dollar gig to attend a birthday party in Mallorca for billionaire Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Recruited by the CIA to investigate the potential kingpin, Cage's unconventional method is put to the test. October 11th, 9pm, Channel 4
The Black Phone
The director's contained scarefest holds up well despite the lack of a continuation. Located in 1970s Colorado, multiple kidnappings has rendered the children frightened. After Finney gets captured by “the Grabber” and locked up in a cellar, he fears a fatal end. However, the non-functional line on the wall repeatedly calls, with eerie communicators offering help, and the intuitive nightmares of his sister Gwen could save him. A solid creepfest. October 11th, late evening, on Film4
This Dramatic Portrait
In the conflict between God and Mammon, the winner is obvious for greed in Michael Showalter's brilliantly over-the-top film adaptation regarding the shamed televangelist and her felon spouse. Andrew Garfield plays the greedy Jim, who proclaims early on, “God does not want us to be poor,”. The couple set about monetising the people's Christian beliefs. It's a spectacle of poor styling, overdone appearance and insincerity, though the lead actress manages to depict the real-life figure in a likable light. October 14th, 1.15am, on Film4
