The Former President's Woke Warning Misses Europe's True Danger: Economic Stagnation.

The recent US national security strategy offers a flawed view of Europe. The document asserts that open-border policies and so-called "progressive" policies represent an existential risk to the continent's identity. Yet, this perspective is based on a serious misreading of the reality. The actual challenge facing the EU is not cultural but economic and technological lag.

The Stark Economic Divide Separating the US and Europe

The data paint a sobering picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by 87%, while a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the European Union. During this period, European income per person fell from 76.5% to just half of the US level. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now has a higher per capita income than major EU nations like Italy and France.

Currently, roughly 50% of the global top fifty technology firms are US-based, while only four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Question

This widening economic gap is driven by stronger efficiency gains in the United States, largely due to technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly American. Over the past five decades, hundreds of American startups have scaled into enterprises valued at more than ten billion dollars, versus only fourteen in Europe.

This disparity prompts a vital question: In the race for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, what is the EU stand? Most analysts concede it is largely a contest between two involving the US and China, with European nations entering at a significant handicap.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of key reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a much more robust and more dynamic system for financing new ventures. Europe has yet to establish a true capital markets union, which limits the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented regulation hinder European business. A American entrepreneur can launch a service under one set of laws to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is split among twenty-seven separate regimes, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was once met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, there are reasons for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have begun to advance serious reform. Notable reports on European competitiveness and the internal market highlight the need for major reforms.

Given appropriate incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths could support far greater levels of commercial innovation.

Europe retains considerable strengths: high-quality workforce, excellent schools and universities, and world-class labs. Alongside a large internal market and high savings rates, these elements have the potential to trigger a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in developing cutting-edge tech, it can still dramatically boost productivity by implementing and tailoring innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

Europe now stands at a decisive moment. As the saying goes, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, without bold steps to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could give way to a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
